Publishing your research data

2016/11/23 @ 14:30 - 16:00

Many major funders and publishers now expect research data to be shared by default. However the process of publishing data can be daunting for those who have not formally shared data before. This practical hands-on workshop will guide attendees through the publication process, using deposit in the University’s Research Data Repository data.bris as a working example. The course will cover:

  • Which data should be shared and when
  • Degrees of openness and controlling data access
  • The importance of a data DOI
  • How to prepare data for publication
  • An introduction to data.bris and a walkthrough of its publishing process
  • An opportunity for attendees to deposit a dataset through data.bris with Research Data Service staff on hand to assist

A sample scenario for publishing in the data.bris test environment will be provided. Researchers are welcome to take the opportunity to deposit their own real datasets for publication during the workshop; please contact data-bris@bristol.ac.uk a minimum of one week prior to the course if you wish to do this.

The workshop is aimed at both research staff and postgraduate students who wish to learn more about data publishing or who are planning to publish in data.bris and would like practical guidance on the process.

Prerequisite: Attendees should complete the Research Data Bootcamp short online tutorial prior to the workshop. This will provide an introduction to research data management that will then be developed during the session.
